What Is Failure to Launch?

Some young adults, typically between ages 18 and 30, experience challenges in the transition to adulthood and independent living. This may show up as difficulty maintaining employment or school enrollment, hesitation about taking on adult responsibilities, remaining at home longer than expected, or continued dependence on parents for emotional or financial support. These challenges can arise for many reasons and often reflect a need for additional support, skill-building, or confidence as young adults find their path forward.

It’s not about laziness or defiance. Failure to launch is often rooted in underlying anxiety, depression, ADHD, perfectionism, or executive functioning challenges. Without the right support, these patterns can deepen - but with targeted therapy, young adults can and do move forward.

At AMK Counseling, our Chicago therapists specialize in helping young adults and college students break through the barriers holding them back and build a life that feels genuinely their own.

“It’s not about laziness. It’s about anxiety, avoidance, and the skills to move forward - and those can be built.”
