Adolescent Counseling in Chicago

The teenage years bring a lot of change at once. Bodies change, friend groups shift, school gets harder, and independence starts to feel both exciting and terrifying. For many teens, this is manageable with the right support. For others, it turns into something heavier: withdrawal, panic, shutting down at home, or a mood that just doesn't lift.

At AMK Counseling, we work with adolescents across a wide range of struggles, from anxiety and depression to ADHD, OCD, and family conflict. Our therapists in Chicago meet teens where they are, without judgment, and help them build the skills to handle what's actually in front of them.

What Is Adolescent Counseling?

Adolescent counseling is therapy built specifically around the developmental stage of the teenage years. It looks different from play therapy for younger children and different from the young adult work we do with clients navigating the transition into independence. Teens are old enough to reflect on their own thoughts and behavior, but they're still developing the emotional regulation. Additionally, they are navigating the push and pull of trying to gain more independence while also navigating complex identity development. We know this can all show up in many different ways.

Our approach respects that. Sessions give teens a private space to talk honestly while still maintaining and developing a partnership with parents and keeping an eye on the bigger picture. Depending on the situation, this often consists of weekly individual sessions, periodic family sessions, or a combination of both.

SIGNS

Signs Your Teen May Benefit From Counseling

Every teenager has difficult days and/or moments. The signs below become worth addressing when they last for weeks, not days, or start interfering with school, friendships, or family life.

  • Withdrawal: Spending most of their time alone, avoiding friends or family they used to enjoy being around.

  • Mood Changes: Irritability, sadness, or anger that shows up more often than not and doesn't seem tied to one specific event.

  • Academic Decline: Slipping grades, missed assignments, or a sudden lack of motivation in school.

  • Anxiety & Perfectionism: Excessive worry, fear of failure, or physical symptoms like stomachaches and headaches before school or social events.

  • Social Media & Self-Esteem Struggles: Comparing themselves to others online, changes in body image, or a drop in confidence tied to social media use.

  • Family Conflict: Frequent arguments at home, shutting parents out, or struggling to communicate without it turning into a fight.

Child Therapist
Our Therapeutic Approach

Because every teen is different, we don't believe in one-size-fits-all programs. We pull from a deep, diverse toolkit of evidence-based methods, tailoring our care to exactly what your teen is facing right now. Here are the core modalities we use to help them build resilience and move forward:

1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps teens identify the thought patterns driving their anxiety, low mood, or avoidance, and replace them with more workable ways of thinking. It's often the starting point for teens dealing with anxiety or depression.

2. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills

For teens navigating intense emotions, mood swings, or relationship conflicts, DBT provides concrete tools for distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and mindfulness. It helps them learn how to pause, manage overwhelming feelings, and make choices they feel proud of.

3. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Instead of trying to fight or eliminate uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, ACT teaches teens how to accept them as normal human experiences. By learning to "hook" less into difficult emotions, they can focus their energy on taking action toward what truly matters to them.

4. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

For teens experiencing OCD or intrusive thoughts, we use ERP, the leading evidence-based treatment for OCD. Sessions gradually help teens face their fears without relying on compulsions to feel better.

5. Parent Support & SPACE

Parents play a bigger role in adolescent therapy than most people expect. Our SPACE approach, developed at the Yale Child Study Center, helps parents reduce accommodation patterns and respond to their teen's anxiety in ways that build resilience instead of reinforcing avoidance.

6. Individual Talk Therapy

A private, nonjudgmental space where teens can work through identity, friendships, family dynamics, and the pressure of just being a teenager right now.

7. Narrative Therapy

Teens often get stuck in a single, negative story about who they are (e.g., "I'm the anxious kid" or "I'm a failure"). Narrative therapy helps them externalize their problems, see their challenges from a healthier distance, and rewrite their personal story based on their actual strengths and values.

8. Executive Functioning & Life Skills Support

For teens with ADHD or organizational struggles, we build practical skills in planning, time management, and follow-through, the tools that make school and daily life feel more manageable.
